Dobber our Male Maxi

Considered the undiscovered gems of the parrot world and a superb pet for the entire family, Pionus Parrots are a great addition to just about any family.

Here at West Point Aviary, we raise 4 species of Pionus Parrots: Maximillian (Maxi), Blue Headed, Dusky and White Capped (white-crowned). Pionus parrots share lots of similarities between the species but each have their own personalities. Ranging from about 9 inches in length to about 12 inches from one species to another. They all share a physical characteristic of having a beautiful spectrum of colors in their plumage, these colors are best seen in natural light and often challenging to capture on camera.

Pionus Parrots are relatively quiet. They have a ‘musky’ smell they give off when excited or nervous. Personally we think they smell very good almost, like a sweet musky scent. Pionus parrots are also known for their ‘wheezing’. When nervous they will wheeze for a few minutes, which in the past has scared their caregivers and they ended up taking them to a vet who was not familiar with this. After lots of tests (and money) they found the bird to be in perfect health! So if your Pionus wheeze’s, they most likely are nervous and not sick. If there is a nasal discharge or other symptoms with the wheezing then it is something else besides nerves and they should be examined by a vet.

The Maximilian Pionus is known for its good natured behavior and any of them make a great pet. They are not aggressive and are known to do quite well in communal aviaries with other species. They can be active birds and should have plenty of toys and room to move about in their cages. They love to be with their humans, but do not require constant interaction in order to remain happy. They love to watch what is going on in the house, and will enjoy being part of the daily activities.

Unlike Amazon Parrots, Pionus Parrots are known for being quiet. They are, however, capable of being loud and this should be considered if looking for a suitable pet for an apartment. Pionus parrots are an intelligent parrot,  some are good talkers that have been reported to have a good vocabulary. The average Pionus lives 20 years, though they can reach 40 years with proper diet and care. They enjoy a healthy diet of fruits, veggies, pellets and some seed. We recommend a cage suitable for an amazon even if you are getting one of the smaller of the Pi's (Dusky & White Capped) They love to play and should have ample room for toys and exercise.
