West Point Aviary now offers Parrot Behavior Consulting.

Do you have a behavior problem that you need assistance with? I offer help with parrot behavior.

I have studied and lived with parrots for over 13 years. I have experience with parrots and their behaviors. Before contacting me please consider the below information:

  • There are no ‘quick fixes’. I do NOT condone or agree with ‘quick fix’ ideas. Never hit a bird or its cage. All that does is make the bird more terrified of you and make him more aggressive because he feels the need to defend himself. Never hit his cage or throw things at it. You will get the same outcome as above. Never squirt the bird with water. First, you don’t want your bird scared of water because they need bathes to survive so every time you bathe him, he will think he is in trouble. Second, squirting the bird does not correct the behavior. It stops it only for a minute because it shocks the bird and you want to ‘stop’ the behavior permanently not for a few minutes.
  • Do not do any aggressive actions towards your bird. Parrots are prey animals so they are very conscious of everything around them. Parrots are also still wild; they have all their wild instincts. Our domestic raised parrots are only 1 or 2 generations from the wild. They are NOT domesticated like a dog or a cat.
  • More times than not there is something in the bird’s environment that is causing the behavior. Look around, what’s different? Sometimes what you ‘want’ the bird to be or do is just not going to happen. Don’t expect him to be something he is not.

I follow Sally Blanchard’s ‘nurturing guidance’. And Chris Davis’s teachings. I provide help to hopefully find an alternative to people giving up their birds. If you are looking for ‘overnight’ success or a ‘quick fix’ or you just don’t really like the bird and are looking for someone to agree with you, I can’t help you. There are more opinions in the bird world than there are facts, but there are some facts.

You should always find out as much as you can about your bird and talk to many experienced people and take what everyone says and use what will help you and your bird. No 2 birds are a like; they are as individual as us.

I help by phone first and charge $10.00 per hour. If it’s needed I will come to your home to help you determine the environmental causes to your bird’s behavior and then the charge is $15.00 per hour plus a trip charge for areas that require extensive travel.. Nobody can ‘fix’ your bird for you; you have to be willing to continue with the behavior training. If you feel I can help you please contact me.
